Regarding Liverpool FC and Trent Alexander-Arnold, there’s some narratives floating about that I wanted to comment on.
1. “Trent will never get legend status now” for close to two years now people have done nothing but say what a liability he is, called him a big time Charlie etc so based on those opinions it doesn’t seem like he was going to be considered a legend anyway. Unless of course you think liabilities should be called legends. Which would be weird.
2. “He should have announced it at the start ” – are you mental? You want a player to announce he’s leaving at the start of the season? That’s bad for literally everyone involved. Demoralises fans and teammates, gives Arne Slot an enormous headache in his first year. The way he’s done it is the only way it could be done. Seal no. 20 then announce when there are no stakes anymore. Think about how Jurgen Klopp announcing he was leaving affected everyone.
3. “He should have signed a contract even if he was leaving so we could get a fee and it’s a win for everyone ” – Madrid will 100% have told him it’s free or he’s not coming. Had he signed a new contract, Madrid wouldn’t have been interested anymore.
4. “He shouldn’t leave, we’re like a family. Family doesn’t ditch” – as I pointed out earlier, some fans ditched him first and have spent two years repeatedly bashing him. Is it a surprise he doesn’t feel compelled to stay?
To be honest, it’s disappointing to see so many people react so negatively. What happened to ‘you’ll never walk alone’? Apparently, we’re no different than any other club and we’ll let you walk alone when it suits us. I get it for players like Diouf for example. That guy should walk alone.
But a guy who helped to restore the club to where it is today? Won every possible trophy and contributed massively to it? How quickly everyone forgets those seasons when he was getting more assists than KDB, while at right back.
Our club motto suggests we are supposed to be better than other fans. Maybe we should start acting like it. Otherwise, it’s just an empty slogan.
