Five German players will go into Thursday’s UEFA Nations League first leg against Italy knowing that if they pick up a yellow card they will be suspended for the return leg in Germany on Sunday.
In fact, that applies to almost the entire German defence, with captain Joshua Kimmich, Antonio RĂ¼diger, David Raum, Nico Schlotterbeck and Robert Andrich all just one yellow card away from suspension.
According to UEFA’s regulations for the Nations League, a player receives a one-match suspension for every two yellow cards.
For the finals, cautions that have not led to suspensions and pending yellow-card suspensions will expire once the quarter-finals have been played.
The first leg will be kicked off at San Siro in Milan on Thursday at 20:45 CET.
